Concrete vs. Steel Structure: Which One Fits Your Project

Reinforced concrete is still the default structural system for residential and mid-rise buildings across Indonesia, for good reason: the material is widely available, the trade skill is common on almost any job site, and it performs well in the humid, tropical conditions most buildings here face.

Steel earns its place when a project needs longer clear spans, a faster construction schedule, or a lighter structure on a site with poor soil conditions. A steel frame can often be erected significantly faster than an equivalent concrete structure, which matters when a construction loan or lease timeline is driving the schedule.

The trade-offs run the other way too. Steel generally costs more per square meter in the Indonesian market, requires more specialized fabrication and welding skill, and needs a fireproofing and corrosion-protection strategy that concrete doesn't. Concrete, meanwhile, is slower to cure and harder to modify once built.

In practice, most of the buildings we design use both: concrete for the foundation and lower floors, steel for long-span roofs, mezzanines or cantilevers where its lighter weight and larger spans earn their added cost. The question isn't which material is better — it's which parts of the building actually need what steel or concrete does best.
