Understanding Structural Loads in Residential Construction

Every structural drawing is an answer to one question: what forces will this building have to carry, and for how long? Engineers group those forces into loads. Dead load is the permanent weight of the building itself — concrete, steel, roof tiles, the walls that never move. Live load is everything temporary: furniture, people, stored goods, anything that comes and goes.

On top of those, engineers add environmental loads. Wind load matters more on taller or more exposed buildings, pushing sideways on facades and up on roof overhangs. In seismically active regions like most of Indonesia, seismic load — the force generated when the ground itself moves — usually governs the design far more than wind does.

These numbers determine decisions that look purely aesthetic but are not: how far apart columns can sit, how deep a beam needs to be, whether a cantilevered balcony is feasible at all. A two-meter cantilever that looks effortless in a rendering can require a significantly larger beam and a heavier foundation underneath it.

You do not need to calculate any of this yourself, but understanding the vocabulary helps you ask better questions when a structural engineer tells you a design needs to change. 'The column can't move' is a much more useful conversation when you understand it's usually about redistributing load, not stubbornness.
